In Round 2 of the 2026 Netball Super League season, London Mavericks travelled north to the Belle Vue Arena to face four-time champions Manchester Thunder. Thunder fielded a refreshed squad featuring two of netball’s biggest names, Nat Metcalf and Eleanor Cardwell, adding experience and firepower to an already formidable lineup.
Thunder started strongly and quickly established control of the contest. Led by a dominant shooting display from Cardwell alongside Sophie Fawns, the hosts built an early advantage to lead 19–11 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw a much stronger response from Mavericks. Showing greater attacking rhythm, the side reduced the deficit in the period with the quarter finishing 16–14 to Thunder. Mavericks’ ball movement stood out, recording an impressive 95% feed accuracy with 20 of 21 feeds finding their target. However, Thunder’s experience proved crucial late in the quarter, with a couple of well-timed Super Shots helping them maintain a 35–25 lead at half time.
Cardwell continued to be a major influence throughout the match, converting six of her seven two-point Super Shot attempts and delivering a standout performance. Mavericks also found success from range through Emma Thacker, who landed eight two-pointers to keep Mavericks within reach.
In the shooting circle, George Inger delivered a composed and clinical display, finishing with a perfect 20 from 20 (100%) from one-point range. Defensively, Mavericks had positive moments as the game progressed, with players working hard to apply pressure across the court.
By the end of the third quarter Thunder had extended their advantage to 52–40, but Mavericks continued to battle. Head coach Tamsin Greenway introduced fresh legs, including Amelea Hall, who brought energy and intensity against her former club while gaining valuable minutes on court.
Despite Mavericks’ improved second-half effort, Thunder were able to keep their opponents at arm’s length and close out the contest 69–59, securing their first win of the 2026 season.
Looking ahead, London Mavericks will be back on the road for their next fixture as we face Birmingham Panthers on Saturday 14 March at 16:00. Fans can watch the match live on the Sky Sports YouTube channel.
