Mavericks Fall to Late Surge from Manchester Thunder

London Mavericks delivered a powerful start but were ultimately undone by a dominant second-half performance from Manchester Thunder, who claimed a 51–39 victory in Round 9.

First Quarter – Fast Start for Mavericks
Mavericks came out firing, setting the tone early and getting the first points on the board. Their intensity paid off as they built an early lead, though Thunder steadily grew into the contest, levelling the score at 9–9 with five minutes to play. Despite the pushback, Mavericks closed the quarter strongly to take a deserved 15–11 lead.

Second Quarter – Mavericks in Control
The home side carried their momentum into the second quarter, quickly stretching their advantage to seven goals within six minutes. Thunder were forced into a tactical timeout as Mavericks dictated play.
A huge interception from Izzi Phillips proved a key momentum moment late in the half, while the defensive unit showed relentless hustle to force turnovers in the closing stages. At the other end, Emma Thacker made excellent use of the Super Shot, supported by George Inger’s consistent finishing. Mavericks headed into halftime in control at 30–22.

Third Quarter – Thunder Fight Back
Thunder came out of the break with renewed intensity, striking first and beginning to chip away at the deficit. A brief pause followed an injury to Emma Thacker, with Amelia Hall stepping in.
As Thunder gathered momentum, they reduced the gap to five, prompting a Mavericks tactical timeout. Hannah Knightbridge was introduced as the contest tightened.
With just three minutes remaining in the quarter, Thunder completed their comeback to level the scores at 37–37. Their experience then shone through in the closing moments, as they surged ahead to lead 45–37 heading into the final period.

Fourth Quarter – Thunder Take Control
Jamie Golob opened the quarter with an immediate interception, and quick connections between Emily Andrew and George Inger saw Mavericks register the first points. However, Thunder’s defensive unit, led by Josie Huckle, made scoring increasingly difficult.
Eleanor Cardwell proved clinical in attack, helping Thunder extend their lead as they found their rhythm. Relentless pressure from the first centre pass of the quarter forced a crucial turnover, allowing Thunder to push further ahead to 51–39.
Despite Mavericks’ efforts to respond, Thunder maintained composure to see out the game and secure the win.
