Mavericks edged out in hard-fought battle in Manchester

By 28 April 2025No Comments

As the halfway point of the season approached, Mavericks delivered one of their most determined performances yet, pushing a strong Manchester Thunder side all the way in a thrilling encounter.

Starting stronger than in recent weeks, Mavericks built into the game well and found their rhythm early. Emma Thacker set the tone in attack, converting consistently under pressure and keeping the scoreboard ticking over. Although Mavericks trailed 13–10 after the first quarter, there were plenty of positive signs across the court, with the team showing better connection and patience in possession.

The second quarter saw Thunder begin to assert their dominance. Their defensive pressure across the court limited Mavericks’ attacking options, and despite Razia Quashie working tirelessly to disrupt Thunder’s shooters, the visitors pulled away to a 31–24 lead at halftime. Mavericks were forced to dig deep, but the spirit and energy remained evident heading into the second half.

Responding well after the break, Mavericks came out with real intent in the third quarter. A quick flurry of goals and a suffocating full-court press rattled Thunder, leading them to call an early tactical timeout. Mavericks’ attack, spearheaded by quick ball movement and clinical finishing, brought them right back into the contest. The introduction of Amelia Hall against her former club added fresh momentum, with Hall immediately making an impact on the scoreboard. Mavericks edged the third quarter, narrowing Thunder’s lead to just two goals and setting up a thrilling final period.

With everything to play for, the final quarter was a tense, high-quality battle. Both teams were clinical under the post, but a few missed chances at crucial moments saw Mavericks lose ground. Thunder’s experience showed in the closing minutes as they managed possession smartly and edged out a 59–54 win.

Despite the narrow defeat, it was a performance full of fight and resilience from Mavericks — a huge step forward as the squad continues to grow across the season. There were strong performances across the court and plenty of positives to take as we now officially reach the halfway stage of the campaign.

Next up, we return home to Hertfordshire Sports Village where we’ll look to build on this momentum as we host Cardiff Dragons in Round 10 of the Netball Super League.
