London Mavericks made the voyage up North, to compete in the inaugural Netball Super Cup. The showdown in Sheffield would be the first opportunity for the new-look Mavericks to test themselves in competitive action against NSL opposition as they took on the trio of Birmingham Panthers, Nottingham Forest and Manchester Thunder.

London Mavericks vs Birmingham Panthers

London Mavericks got off to a strong start, capitalising on their first attack to take the lead through a signature connection between Emily Andrew and Emma Thacker. With Vicki Oyesola and Razia Quashie anchoring the defence, London Mavericks established a solid foundation to launch their attacks. Emily Andrew made history by scoring the first-ever Super Shot on English soil, extending the lead to 7-2 at halftime.

Introduced in the second half, Amelia Hall made an immediate impact. Her vision and control opened the court, allowing Emma Thacker and Emily Andrew to be clinical in the final third.  

Kira Rothwell joined the court, accompanied by Chelsea Blackman who made her London Mavericks debut. After a dramatic, action-packed finish from both Mavericks and Panthers, Kira Rothwell sealed the victory with a last second goal.

London Mavericks vs Nottingham Forest

A tough battle saw London Mavericks fall short in our second clash of the tournament, against Nottingham Forest. From the first centre pass, Forest set the tempo well, applying relentless pressure and capitalising on their opportunities. Mavericks battled in a fast-paced physical contest, with the team fighting hard until the half time whistle, with Emily Andrew and Emma Thacker putting points on the board. The two sides headed into half time with the score at 12-13.

Despite a determined effort in the second half, Nottingham maintained their intensity making it difficult for Mavericks to close the gap. Izzi Phillips showed great defensive attributes throughout the game, making some crucial interceptions to disrupt Forest’s style of play. Her work rate and determination kept the pressure on in a high intensity battle. Mavericks showed glimpses of strength, but couldn’t find a way back into the game.

London Mavericks vs Manchester Thunder

After a dynamic first half with action on both ends, the team’s momentum stayed strong thanks to the combined attacking efforts of Emily Andrew and Emma Thacker. The team’s headed into half time, trailing by one point. Mavericks 7 – 8 Thunder.

With the scoreline tight, the Mavericks were eager to make an early impact in the second half. Ellie Rattu and Vicki Oyesola set the tone with urgency and leadership, while the entire team fought relentlessly to create opportunities. With only a minute remaining, the London Mavericks were pushing to overcome a one-point deficit, trailing 11-12 with victory within reach. However, a crucial super shot from Thunder shifted the momentum, allowing the Manchester-based side to secure the win. In a fast-paced, physical battle, the Mavericks showcased undeniable effort, determination, and resilience.
