New London Mavericks signing Jamie Van Wyk has arrived in the NSL with a sense of excitement that she’s exactly where she’s meant to be. The 25-year-old South African international, recently recognised as one of her country’s standout defenders, has long had a move to Mavericks in her sights and is relishing the chance to work under Head Coach Tamsin Greenway in a world-class environment. With a fiercely competitive defensive style and a hunger to keep learning at the highest level, Van Wyk is already settling into life in London and is eager to connect with the club’s fan base.

“I think the group and management have been super welcoming. Everyone’s been so nice, it really feels like I’m home to be honest. It’s just a really good, positive environment.”

“Tamsin and I have been speaking back and forth for the past two years now, and I think she has wanted me to come and join the group. It was something that I’ve always been looking forward to. And then when I got the offer, I obviously couldn’t say no.”

“I’m very, very excited. I mean, she is someone that’s got so much knowledge and wisdom, and for me to be a sponge and learn from someone like her, I’m really, really excited”
Describing her playing style
“I would say my defensive style is very man on. I really like eliminating my player, so wherever they are, I try to completely take out the picture. I’d like to call myself a fierce defender, I have a lot of hustles and just try and go for every ball.”
Being named best defender in South Africa
“I am just so honoured to take that type of accolade. There’s a lot of talent in South Africa, so to be awarded with that, I’m really honoured. I just can’t wait to see what happens in the next NSL season.”
Looking ahead to the NSL
“I think the overall competition is a higher level from what I’m used to. I’m really excited for the quality of netball and just being surrounded by players and management that have also had such good experience all over the world.”
Jamie’s message to London Mavericks fans
“First of all, I’m really excited to meet all the fans. I’ve heard there’s a huge fan base but I think in advance, I just want to say, thank you for all the support that they’ve shown to the club and I’m really looking forward to seeing you all at the games.”
