The Copper Box Arena played host to the first London Derby of the season as London Mavericks made the short trip across the capital to face an unbeaten London Pulse side. Both teams entered the contest without a loss, but it was Pulse who maintained their perfect record by the final whistle.
Pulse came out firing, scoring 15 of the opening 18 goals and setting an early tone. A tactical timeout from the Mavericks helped steady the ship, with Emily Andrew finding the net and Razia Quashie leading the defensive effort to disrupt Pulse’s rhythm and spark some momentum.
The Super Shot once again proved crucial for the Mavericks, with shooters Emily Andrew and Emma Thacker combining effectively to convert key double-pointers. Mavericks showed renewed energy in the second quarter, creating more scoring chances and narrowing the gap.
Amelia Hall and Kira Rothwell were introduced late in the second quarter, with Rothwell continuing her impressive form from range, maintaining a flawless Super Shot record.
The third quarter saw both teams go toe-to-toe, with neither side able to gain a decisive edge. For Mavericks, there were encouraging signs as the defensive trio of Razia Quashie, Cerys Finn, and Izzy Phillips tightened up their unit, limiting Pulse’s opportunities. Rothwell capped off the quarter with yet another Super Shot to keep Mavericks in touch.
However, Pulse showed their class in the final 15 minutes, asserting control and closing out the match to secure the win and stay top of the table.
The two sides will meet again at Wembley Arena on May 11th — a rematch Mavericks fans will be eagerly anticipating.
