London Mavericks’ Goal Shooter Emma Thacker has earned a call-up to the England Senior squad for the upcoming Vitality Netball Nations Cup. She joins the team as an injury replacement for Lois Pearson, with the Vitality Roses set to face Malawi, South Africa, and Uganda in early February.
Emma was on her way to dinner when she received the phone call that every netball player dreams of.
“Jess [Thirlby] called me, and it felt so surreal. It was a mix of excitement and nerves, but celebrating with my friends made it all the more special.”
A familiar face within the England A squad and having trained with the senior team throughout the year, Emma is well-acquainted with her teammates. She will also reunite with current Mavericks players Ellie Rattu and Razia Quashie in the squad for the upcoming series.
The call-up marks the realisation of a dream that began at school, where Emma first discovered her passion for netball. Though she also competed in tennis and rowing, netball took the crown as Thacker fell in love with the team element, representing a space to create and build strong friendships.
“When I really love something, it makes me enjoy it even more and drives me to be better. Playing at school with friends is still one of my highlights. It made me love the game and want to push to play for England.”
Emma went on to make her NSL debut in her first year of university with Loughborough Lightning, before going on to join the Mavericks ahead of the 2024 season, a decision influenced by the club’s stellar coaching lineup, something that Thacker believes has played a huge part in her progress.
“If it wasn’t for the coaching I’ve had at Mavericks over the past year, I definitely wouldn’t be where I am now. They’ve pushed me outside my comfort zone in the best way possible. Mavericks really focus on developing the whole person, not just the athlete, and that off-court support has been so important for me.”
Emma believes this international opportunity will not only be a career highlight but also a significant step in her growth as a player.
“I definitely think this experience will give me the confidence to push forward this season and deliver consistent performances. Playing in a completely different environment against top international teams will help me develop my game, especially alongside such experienced players. I’m really looking forward to coming back with the confidence I gain from this international block and having a great season with London Mavericks.”
