Mavericks faced a challenging start against the reigning champions, Lightning, who quickly asserted their dominance and took early control of the game. Despite the early pressure, Emily Andrew provided composure for the Mavericks with precise shooting under the post, helping to steady the ship. However, it was the home side who seized the early momentum, finishing the first quarter on a strong run, leading 23-12.
In the second quarter, Lightning continued to impose their authority, energized by the support of the home crowd. While Mavericks showed flashes of promising play and resilience, the champions maintained their momentum. Tactical adjustments from Lightning further extended their lead, entering halftime with a commanding 44-28 advantage.
The third quarter saw a renewed effort from the Mavericks, sparked by the return of Suzie Liverseidge and Izzi Phillips. Their reintroduction helped the team find rhythm and reset their strategy. Following a tactical timeout, Mavericks displayed glimpses of a potential comeback, with Emma Thacker making effective use of the supershot to apply pressure on Lightning’s defence. However, Lightning responded in kind, regaining their composure late in the quarter and continuing to steadily build their lead.
In the final quarter, the Mavericks fought hard to close the gap, netting several early goals. Despite their determination, the task proved too great as Lightning maintained their fast-paced, purposeful ball movement. Notable defensive efforts from Cerys Finn and Jemma Donoghue combined to challenge the champions’ shooters, while captain Ellie Rattu led the team with strong leadership throughout, ensuring every effort was made on court.
Although the Mavericks showed plenty of positives and resilience, Lightning’s superior skill, experience, and composure ultimately secured their victory with a final score of 79-58.
