London Mavericks are poised for a landmark moment this Saturday as they step onto the court for their inaugural match as a reborn franchise. The pre-season friendly at Hertfordshire Sports Village will provide fans with an exciting first look at the revamped Mavericks squad as they gear up for the NSL 2025 season.

Their opponents, Loughborough Lightning’s NXT Gen squad will provide Mavericks’ first test as a newly formed unit as the two sides go head to head this Saturday.

London Mavericks will welcome back some familiar faces for this historic match. Sharpshooters Kira Rothwell and Emma Thacker are set to return to action, adding firepower to the attacking lineup. Team captain Ellie Rattu, fresh from international duty, will rejoin the squad alongside Mavericks centurion Razia Quashie. Quashie, known for her formidable defensive presence, will likely resume her dominant partnership with Vicki Oyesola.

“It’s great to have Raz, Ellie, Emma, and Vicki back from international duties and available for this weekend’s game before they head off again to represent England A and England in the Nations Cup. Having them back is a fantastic opportunity for the squad to gain valuable court time together.”

said Director of Netball, Tamsin Greenway.

Fans will also have the chance to witness the debut of three new players in Mavericks colours. Amelia Hall, who joined from Leeds Rhinos following a standout NSL season, is set to make her first appearance. Suzie Liverseidge makes the matchday squad having recently arrived from Severn Stars. Australian defender Chelsea Blackman, recently signed from Adelaide Thunderbirds in the SSN, will make her English debut, bringing a gritty edge to the Mavericks’ defence.

Two promising players from the Mavericks’ NXTGen squad will also take to the court. Azara Wilmot, a versatile Goal Attack and Goal Shooter, has been in exceptional form with the U19 team and will make her senior squad debut. Joining her is Jade Popoola, a former Loughborough player who has transitioned to the Mavericks for the 2024/25 season.

“We are really excited to see how they both perform not only on Saturday but in future London Mavericks games.”

Greenway noted.

The team will be without Emily Andrew, who is on a return-to-play pathway following an ankle injury. She has rejoined the squad after spending the holidays in Australia and is progressing well in her rehabilitation.

“She’s progressing well, but we’re being cautious and keeping her out of the squad for now.”

Greenway explained.

Additionally, Izzi Phillips will miss the match as she co-captains the England U21s on their tour, an achievement that has filled the Mavericks with pride.

“Izzi’s achievement is remarkable, and the entire team will be cheering her on from afar.”

Greenway said.

Tamsin Greenway expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming home game, the first of 2025, and the opportunity to play in front of the Mavericks’ loyal supporters.

“We can’t wait to have our first run out of 2025 at Hertfordshire Sports Village. It’s going to be an exciting clash, and we’re looking forward to the support from our home fans.”

As the Mavericks embark on their NSL 2025 journey, this pre-season friendly represents more than just a warm-up—it’s the beginning of a new chapter in the team’s history. All eyes will be on how they fare against the reigning champions, setting the tone for an exhilarating season ahead.
