The defensive dream team is back! Vicki Oyesola has returned to London Mavericks, reuniting with her partner in crime, Razia Quashie, to form one of the most feared defensive duos in the league. Together, they’ll be crushing the hopes of opposition shooters all season long.
Oyesola’s journey began in the Mavericks’ pathway system, before she ventured to Loughborough Lightning and Leeds Rhinos, making her return to Mavericks ahead of the 2024 season.
In her debut season with Loughborough Lightning, the steely defender impressed with the midlands-based side, winning young player of the season and later going on to make her England debut in the Autumn of 2017.
This season, with the introduction of shortened rosters, Oyesola’s versatility across the defensive positions adds even more value to the Mavericks’ lineup. Director of Netball, Tamsin Greenway, is buzzing to have Vicki back, sharing her excitement, saying:
“Vicki returning is fantastic for us. Obviously, she covers three positions, goal defence, goalkeeper and wing defence, which is really important when the squads go down to 10. You know, the reason we signed Vicki from Rhinos a couple of seasons ago was because her ability to win the ball is untouched.”
Most comfortable in the goal defence position, Oyesola brings speed, an impressive vertical jump, and a keen ability to read the game, making her a critical part of any defensive scheme. Her skill set not only disrupts attacking plays but also makes her a valuable target in transition to attack.
Since making her international debut in 2017, Vicki has faced challenges, including an injury that slowed her progress. However, her resilience saw her return to the England squad in 2023, competing in both the Fast5 tournament and the Taini Jamison Series against New Zealand. With 9 international caps now under her belt, she’s more determined than ever to continue developing at the highest level.
Greenway emphasised the importance of Vicki’s partnership with Razia Quashie, stating:
“The partnership with Raz I think is really, really important. Raz has been at the club for so long, and she wanted to partner with somebody in the England system. And I think what those two can bring to the circle, they’re an absolute force to be reckoned with.”
Mavericks fans have a lot to be excited about for season two in the Vicki Oyesola x London Mavericks box set. Greenway summed up Oyesola’s fit with the team perfectly:
“She’s a London girl. She suits Maverick life. She is different, the way she plays the game, the way she wins the ball. Vicki is in terms of how she plays the game and how she wants to win the ball, that exciting brand of netball we want to play is perfectly suited.”
With Vicki Oyesola back in Mavericks colours, the 2025 season promises fierce competition, renewed hope, and unforgettable moments. Mavericks fans, get ready—this season is one for the history books.
