Mavericks came out on top in a pulsating Round 8 clash that had everything – end-to-end action, clutch supershots, and the league’s first taste of extra time this season. After 60 minutes couldn’t separate the sides, it was Mavericks who held their nerve in overtime to seal a statement win.
The opening quarter was classic NSL – fast-paced, high-intensity, and momentum swinging from end to end. Both teams exchanged leads throughout, but a late supershot saw Cardiff Dragons edge ahead 13–15 at the first break.
The second quarter picked up right where it left off. Dragons maintained their intensity and slim advantage, but Mavericks refused to let the gap widen. Suzie Liverseidge and Ellie Rattu dictated the tempo in the middle, their chemistry and experience shining through. Amy Hepworth-Wain made an instant impact off the bench, linking up brilliantly with Emily Andrew who slotted a vital supershot to keep Mavericks within reach. At the half, Cardiff led 24–29.
The third quarter presented early challenges for Mavericks as Cardiff came out firing, extending their lead to 10 within three minutes. A tactical timeout by Camilla Buchanan and her coaching team helped reset the side, and the introduction of Kira Rothwell sparked a momentum shift. Donoghue and Quashie were pivotal in defence, forcing turnovers and helping close the gap. A dramatic end to the third saw Mavericks draw level.
With the scores tied and just 15 minutes remaining, it was anyone’s game. The final quarter was a tense affair, with both sides trading supershots in the dying minutes. Neither team blinked, and at 55–55, the match was sent to extra time – the first of the 2025 NSL season.
Mavericks came alive in the first half of extra time. Emma Thacker stepped up with three outrageous back-to-back supershots to give her side the lead and spark new energy. The second half was all about composure, and Mavericks showed exactly that. Clinical in attack and cohesive in defence, they shut down the Dragons to take home a hard-fought 67–62 win – and a very valuable three points.
A gutsy performance, a thrilling contest, and a win that could prove crucial. All eyes now turn to the capital as Mavericks prepare for a huge London derby next weekend at the OVO Arena Wembley.
