Mavericks came out firing in front of a packed, sold-out Essex Arena crowd as they made their debut at the venue in Round 4, taking on current league leaders Loughborough Lightning.

It was a fast and confident start from the hosts, with George Inger converting the opening opportunity for the home side. Mavericks quickly found their rhythm, edging ahead in the early exchanges and feeding off the energy of the home crowd. Izzi Phillips made an immediate impact, producing a stunning flying intercept that lifted both her teammates and the arena, setting the tone for a high-intensity contest. With both sides matching each other stride for stride, the scores were locked at 15-15 after a fiercely contested opening period.

As the game developed, Mavericks continued to show their intent. The introduction of Hannah Knightbridge proved to be a pivotal moment, as she stamped her authority on the match with relentless work rate across the court. Covering every inch of the court, she linked seamlessly between defence and attack, delivering feed after feed into the circle. Her connection with Emily Andrew, Emma Thacker and George Inger kept the Lightning defence under constant pressure.

Heading into the closing stages, with just two points separating the sides, Mavericks dug deep. Sharp, quick mid-court play combined with confident long balls into the circle allowed them to break down Lightning’s defensive structure. The movement between Knightbridge and Andrew was particularly effective, creating opportunities for Thacker under the post.

Despite the relentless pressure and a huge performance against the league leaders, it was Lightning who found that final burst of momentum at the crucial moment. Composed finishing from Sammy Wallace-Joseph secured the narrow victory, denying Mavericks what would have been a statement win.

Nevertheless, a performance of this calibre against the top side in the league will give Mavericks plenty of confidence as they look ahead to Round 5, where they travel to Cardiff to face LexisNexis Dragons.
