Mavericks faced a stern challenge in Round 6 as they came up against reigning NSL champions Loughborough Lightning in what proved to be an intense and high-quality encounter.

The opening quarter was a tightly contested battle, with both sides showing attacking flair and composure under pressure. Mavericks came out firing, with Emma Thacker in sensational form under the post, confidently converting opportunities and helping her side edge ahead. The tempo and intensity from Mavericks were notable as they took a slender two-goal lead into the second quarter.

The second quarter picked up right where the first left off—end-to-end netball with moments of brilliance from both camps. However, as the quarter progressed, Lightning began to assert their dominance. Their clinical execution across the court and disciplined man-on marking made life difficult for the Mavericks attack. Despite this, Mavericks remained well in the contest, trailing 32–38 at the half-time break.

Lightning emerged from the interval with renewed energy and purpose. Their sharp shooting and relentless defensive pressure saw them extend their lead, while Mavericks struggled to convert their chances. Nevertheless, defenders Jemma Donoghue and Razia Quashie were standout performers, applying consistent pressure and producing vital turnovers in a bid to swing momentum back in Mavericks’ favour.

The introduction of the Super Shot proved crucial in Lightning’s favour, as they capitalised late in the third quarter to widen the gap.

In the final quarter, Lightning’s experience and composure continued to shine through. Mavericks battled hard, with Amelia Hall and Emily Andrew working tirelessly to keep the scoreboard moving, but the deficit ultimately proved too much to overcome.

Despite the 57–69 defeat, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance. Mavericks matched the champions for large spells of the game and showed real grit throughout. Attention now turns to another huge clash next weekend as Mavericks take on long-time rivals Manchester Thunder.
